When to Call the Pediatrician: Newborn Warning Signs

Know exactly which symptoms require immediate attention, which can wait until morning, and which are completely normal—straight from a pediatrician.

At 2 AM with a fussy newborn, every parent has wondered: "Should I call the doctor? Am I overreacting? What if I wait and it gets worse?" This middle-of-the-night anxiety is universal, and it's made worse by the fact that newborns can't tell us what's wrong. While I always tell parents that they should never hesitate to call if they're truly worried—your instincts matter—I also know it helps to have a clear framework for what's urgent, what can wait, and what's actually completely normal newborn behavior that just looks scary.
